West Coast transplant of Plaza Suite is second-gear Neil Simon, a quartet of sketches allowing for a slew of Southern California jokes ("It's like paradise with a lobotomy") and moving progressively into lower and lower comedy. Simon is on his happiest level in the one with Maggie Smith as a nervous Oscar nominee and Michael Caine as her homosexual husband. Higher artistic aspirations are hinted at, though, in a credits sequence utilizing David Hockney's paintings and background music by a jazz ensemble made up of "names" such as Hubert Laws, Shelly Manne, others. With Alan Alda, Jane Fonda, Walter Matthau, Elaine May, Bill Cosby, and Richard Pryor; directed by Herbert Ross. (1978) — Duncan Shepherd
