Deprived of parenting as a lad, reared by television ("I learned the facts of life from watching The Facts of Life!"), he's now a lisping cable installer with a flypaper personality: he wants to be best friends with his new customer. Despite some side trips -- Court TV, "theme" restaurants, home karaoke -- the movie is a fairly straightforward takeoff on the Unlawful Entry and Single White Female brand of thriller. But Jim Carrey doesn't sufficiently tone down his acting to be taken seriously even for parody purposes. Matthew Broderick, as the hapless target of his affections, is funnier with one-tenth the effort. Directed by Ben Stiller. (1996) — Duncan Shepherd
