Well, somebody sooner or later had to cross the Australian continent. And somebody sooner or later had to make a movie about them. This is it, a hundred and twenty-seven years later, to be exact. The first scene, with a topiary maze illusionistically opening up onto the Outback, is daring and surprising. Then it's plod, plod, plod -- and always the nagging rhetorical question, seemingly aimed as much at the moviegoer as at the party of explorers, of whether or not one is man enough to keep on going. With Jack Thompson, Nigel Havers, and Greta Scacchi; directed by Graeme Clifford. (1987) — Duncan Shepherd
