Siegel, that is -- the vain gangster, the "visionary" gangster, the lovesick gangster, the henpecked gangster, the moonstruck, the loony, the buggy gangster. He makes a wide-ranging acting portfolio for the narrowly talented Warren Beatty, but he never really comes into focus as a character. And the movie on the whole, despite the opulent period production and the occasional jag into psychotic violence, tends to float off into light comedy. Creditable jobs by Harvey Keitel and Elliott Gould as tough-skinned and thick-skulled henchmen respectively. With Annette Bening, Ben Kingsley, and Joe Mantegna; written by James Toback; directed by Barry Levinson. (1991) — Duncan Shepherd
