Hitler killed off SA leader Ernst Röhm, not only for his ambition but for his brazen, risky gayness. The erotic love and fear simmering in a macho ideology that exalts male bonding and butch brutality gets vivid examination in Nicolo Donato’s film. A smart but alienated youth (Thure Lindhardt) is purged from the Danish army because of gay desires. He finds love with a skinhead in a band of neo-Nazis led by a big, suave thug, more a Göring than a Hitler figure. While often predictable, the movie has strong nuances and sensitive, detailed acting. (2010) — David Elliott
