Was the death of General Patton the result of a mere motor accident, or was he in fact struck down by a high-powered rubber bullet which snapped his neck, without puncturing his skin, at the precise instant his car collided with a strategically parked truck, thus falling victim to a plot among corrupt U.S. Army officers to prevent him from solving the Reichsbank gold robbery? Decide for yourself. This cockamamy conspiracy theory is Day of the Jackal in reverse -- you know from the outset that the assassin's target is doomed to die, and the focus is on the cat-and-mouse maneuvers leading up to that climax. These are staged by John Hough with a fine feeling for deep space and angular compositions, and they are more entertaining than they have any reason to be. With John Cassavetes, Max Von Sydow, Sophia Loren, and George Kennedy. (1978) — Duncan Shepherd
