Science fiction of the Imaginary Invention type: a piece of headgear, in this instance, able to record and transmit subjective experience, memory, emotion, and it's not clear what all. Indeed, the movie is quite carelessly thought out in terms of what the device can record and particularly from what point of view, and quite prosaically thought out even as far as it goes (roller coaster, racing car, hang-glider, and so forth -- although the Cardiac Arrest Tape merits its spot as the movie centerpiece). The machine, even so, gets much more attention than the humans -- a preference emphasized by the wide-screen fish-eye shots used for the machine, in jarring contrast to the narrower, flatter ones used for the humans. Christopher Walken, Natalie Wood, Louise Fletcher, Cliff Robertson; written and directed by Douglas Trumbull. (1983) — Duncan Shepherd
