Artificial respiration on 1930s slapstick, particularly the Marx Brothers, particularly A Night at the Opera. The patient -- the corpse -- surprisingly still has some life left in him ("You know The Great Volare?" "Ah, I knew him back when he was The Pretty Good Volare"). This is, above all else, a sobering comment on more recent forms of screen comedy. John Turturro, as a brazen shyster who gains control of a ballet company, stands in for Groucho; and he and his cohorts (the less clearly derived Bob Nelson and Mel Smith) work very hard, earning respect and sympathy in greater amounts than laughs. Written by Pat Proft; directed by Dennis Dugan. (1992) — Duncan Shepherd
