A true curiosity, up the alley of the professional psychologist more than of the casual moviegoer: a neo-Depression escapist romantic comedy about an affluent black Lothario who loves 'em and leaves 'em dangling, and who has the tables turned on him ("Call me?") and discovers the meaning of true love. It's a "growth" movie in which Eddie Murphy is trying to grow too, despite falling well short of the desired earnestness at the end. (And speaking of growth: nothing is more fascinating to watch than the changes in Murphy's meticulously clipped hair from scene to scene, shot to shot.) His upscale aspirations somewhat hamper his sense of comedy, though they don't rescue it from all rawness and raunchiness. Halle Berry carries the burden of being Ms. Perfect lightly and deftly. With Robin Givens, Grace Jones, and Eartha Kitt; directed by Reginald Hudlin. (1992) — Duncan Shepherd
