Grind-it-out romantic thriller centered around a blind violinist who, no sooner than she receives a corneal transplant, becomes an eyewitness to a murder, albeit a blurry eyewitness, and hence a potential victim. In that nutshell, it sounds about right for Ingrid Bergman or Ida Lupino, if Ingrid or Ida swore like a sailor and took off her top. (In other words, it's only Madeleine Stowe.) And Ingrid or Ida would likely be playing Mendelssohn, not Celtic fiddle in a folk band called The Drovers. Ultimately the heroine falls in love with the abrasive Chicago cop on the case (the nonabrasive, even quite emollient, Aidan Quinn), and much more ultimately a murderer is produced out of a magician's hat. The tricks of photography and editing to evoke the point of view of the Partially Sighted are intriguing if not very convincing. Directed by Michael Apted. (1994) — Duncan Shepherd
