In the tradition of The Yakuza, The Challenge, House of Bamboo, Rififi in Tokyo; namely the tradition of Western tough guy in the Land of the Rising Sun. Michael Douglas (who always looks as if he knows he's being photographed, possibly because he is under investigation by Internal Affairs, but more likely for some other reason) is a New York cop who takes Ugly Americanism to Elephant Man extremes: "What do I look like — chopped liver?" "I usually get kissed before I get fucked!" "Fuck patience!" "Hey, I'm talkin' to you!" Etc. And director Ridley Scott discovers only that there is as much of smoke and steam and dust-speckled sunbeams in Japan as in America (and as much of neon as in his futuristic Blade Runner). With Ken Takakura, Andy Garcia, and Kate Capshaw. (1989) — Duncan Shepherd
