Ousmane Sembene's slim, lithe tale of a Senegalese maid who emigrates to France to take a position in a bourgeois apartment, and who, her optimism dimmed by the cloistered drudgery, stages a rebellion that takes the form of moodiness and indolence. To make clear the causes for complaint and cultural misalliance, the filmmaker periodically rears back and swings very hard, but his punch is so light that he remains nevertheless on the quiet side of overstatement.
