Big surprise is that John Cassavetes would want to direct so conventional a Hollywood project: a reunion of the stars of The In-Laws, Peter Falk and Alan Arkin, with pretty much the same personas, but this time in a comic twist on Double Indemnity (with a dash of Les Diaboliques). Bigger surprise is that his tempo would be so conventionally stepped up and his total running time would be a tidy ninety-three minutes. It is no surprise that, even so, the people and their personalities are his first concern. Alan Arkin, as the only one of them not bolted in place from the start, comes off best. Some of his tricks, like his chimp-in-chains shuffle, are overfamiliar, but that wouldn't include his attempt at verbalization after a sip of some Norwegian sardine liqueur: something between a mouthwash-gargle and phlegm-clearance. With Beverly D'Angelo, Charles Durning, and Robert Stack. (1985) — Duncan Shepherd
