The cast of characters includes a whisky-sodden British diplomat, an ex-prostitute Indian wife, an ex-seminarian Paraguayan rebel, an apolitical, amoral doctor with allegiances to all of the above, an implacable South American policeman -- well, it's Graham Greene, you see. The Honorary Consul, to be precise. The abbreviated TV style tends, however, to evade Greenean moral issues. And thus, the only graspable explanation for the behavior of the lead character (and for the Venetian-blind shadows and sudorific light that seem to follow him around) is that he is played by Richard Gere. The latter's British accent is as indeterminate as the moral issues. With Michael Caine and Bob Hoskins; directed by John Mackenzie. (1983) — Duncan Shepherd
