Occultist moonshine, centered around the imported-from-Cuba underground religion of santeria. There is an authentic element of anthropology and cultural relativism ("Name me one religion in which atrocities have not been committed in the name of God"), and more than the usual dosage of psychology, human interest, and "fine acting." That sort of thing is intended to add weight to the proceedings, and to protect the reputation and self-esteem of director John Schlesinger. It certainly does add weight in the sense of "heaviness," and "slowness," though hardly in the sense of "significance." Some of it, like the eruption of the golf-ball-sized pimple, is quite intense; more of it is quite strained. Martin Sheen, Helen Shaver, Robert Loggia, Harris Yulin. (1987) — Duncan Shepherd
