A supposed "showcase" for a large ensemble of New Generation actors, not all of them as new as they need to be for their ten-year high-school reunion (in the dead of the Massachusetts winter!). Scott Rosenberg's glib, stilted, writerly dialogue -- to do with the ongoing growing pains at the gateway of the big three-oh -- elicits mostly mannered portrayals of self-absorbed fatheads, a taxing combination. Worst manners: Michael Rapaport, edging out Rosie O'Donnell, whose prior manneredness remains unchanged, and the blameless Natalie Portman as a precocious thirteen-year-old in a not totally innocent flirtation with her "cool" next-door neighbor. Timothy Hutton, Matt Dillon, Mira Sorvino, Martha Plimpton, Uma Thurman, Max Perlich, Lauren Holly, Annabeth Gish; directed by Ted Demme. (1996) — Duncan Shepherd
