Forced, flat follow-up to Get Shorty, crudely directed by F. Gary Gray and coarsely photographed by Jeffrey L. Kimball, moving its base of operations from the film industry to the music business. John Travolta and Uma Thurman dance an encore to their number in Pulp Fiction. The Rock, stretching himself, playing a full-blooded black man rather than a half-and-half as in Walking Tall, tries to have some fun as a homosexual bodyguard and would-be actor; and Vince Vaughn tries to do likewise as a talent agent and would-be African-American. None of this spirit is contagious, though some of it is noxious. Based on the novel by Elmore Leonard; with Christina Milian, Cedric the Entertainer, Harvey Keitel, and, as himself, Steven Tyler of Aerosmith. (2005) — Duncan Shepherd
