The passive-aggressive daughter of a dead country singer (Allison Tolman) and her moneyed mother (JoBeth Williams) are living comfortably off the old man’s legacy until a headlong sister-from-another-groupie (Sophie Reid) comes along to claim her piece of the residuals pie. Half the fun of watching a movie like this is waiting for the characters’ neuroses to make plain their motivation. At about the halfway point, writer-director Jason Cortlund sent what had the makings of a tight indie thriller to the showers and planted a garden variety gore-fueled revenge pic on the mound. (When Ms. Williams first read the script, what did she imagine would happen to her character after the foreshadowing smoothie went clumsily crashing to the floor?) The move isn’t quite enough to sabotage either of the film’s two outstanding lead performances, but damn if the last 20 minutes wasn’t spent wondering what might have been. (2017) — Scott Marks
