Anna and Ben (writer-director Zoe Lister-Jones and Adam Pally) are a married couple so well-versed in the art of bickering that their verbal fisticuffs end with “F.U.’s” exchanged in unison. So it's not super-suprising that recycling arguments by setting them to music turns out to be a perfectly logical way to add spice to their flagging relationship. And it takes such little effort! (The sing-songy stream of consciousness melodia the duo produce as a metaphor for how contemporary pop tunes are born is never fully explored.) Initial dialogue exchanges explode out of a laugh cannon before more conventional plot procedures — a dormant sex life reignites the moment they get done laying down their first rack, magic mushrooms as a means of heightening the creative process, etc. — arrive to outshout the second half. Happily, it’s a case of the end more than justifying the means as Lister-Jones (Lola Versus) pulls it all together for a conclusion that’s both heartfelt and cautionary. (2017) — Scott Marks
