Beatle lore for the devotee, centered around the original fifth member of the band, Stuart Sutcliffe, whose first love was painting and whose head was easily turned by a pretty German photographer during a gig at a Hamburg strip club. The nondevotee will find the dramatic issues ("All he does is stand there," complains Paul McCartney of the enigmatic, sunglassed stage manner of Sutcliffe) a bit deficient. Passable look-alikes for the better-known Beatles, particularly Ian Hart for John Lennon; and the music ("Good Golly, Miss Molly," etc.) does take you back. But it could do that without the pictures. Stephen Dorff, Sheryl Lee; directed by Iain Softley. (1994) — Duncan Shepherd
