Sam Raimi's slap-happy sequel to his Evil Dead II: the one-handed hero (how he got that way is explained in a cumbersome recap at the outset) is sucked through a time tunnel to the Middle Ages (and a different continent), armed with a custom-fitted chainsaw and a shotgun that more than once materializes out of nowhere. To return to his own time, he must get his hands on the Necromicon, but not before uttering roughly the same magic words from The Day the Earth Stood Still. Uttering them too roughly, he arouses an army of the dead. Bruce Campbell, with good enough looks to step into the role of Superman, hits and sustains the right note for his anachronistic toughtalk ("All right, you primitive screwheads, listen up!" and "Yo! She-bitch! Let's go!"); and the general mood of silliness is relaxing if not terribly rib-tickling. (1993) — Duncan Shepherd
