Topical paranoia thriller about an expert in terrorism on the faculty of George Washington University, who comes to suspect that his smarmy new suburban neighbor with the Stepford wife and the Village-of-the-Damned daughter is himself a terrorist. That would be quite a coincidence if it were just a coincidence, but in fact it is one of those overpresumptuous movie plots that depend upon people acting in ways in which people never could be depended upon to act. Suspense does build, and Jeff Bridges brings great conviction and urgency to the role of the rabid anti-terrorist. Tim Robbins, on the opposite side of the street, tips his hand more than necessary as the target of suspicion. The final payoff aims, in a manner reminiscent of Seven, for the solar plexus, but hits below the belt. Joan Cusack, Hope Davis; directed by Mark Pellington. (1999) — Duncan Shepherd
