Sent to the home of an ill factory worker to fetch a change of clothes, an 18-year-old boy discovers a journal that changes his life (and the course of this heart-saddening and fiercely naturalistic road movie). The notebook to which author and off-camera narrator Cristiano (Aristides de Sousa) gives voice is part freeform diary, part shaggy dog story, and in its understated manner, a reflection of our times. For ten years, whether he’s doing renovation work on a brothel or waxing nostalgic over objects he and a fellow day-laborer have lifted and carried over the years, destiny hastens every step of Cristiano’s journey. Filmmakers João Dumans and Affonso Uchoa work hard to cover each of his chance meetings with varying degrees of formal finesse. A third act confessional sticks out like a stage reading adrift in an otherwise steady surge of cinematic invention. (2017) — Scott Marks
