Spongy satire divides its feeble forces between the Bush Administration (à clef) and the TV talent contest, American Idol, aligning the two targets when the mush-brained President agrees to appear as a guest judge on the season finale, a showdown pitting a "white-trash girl from Ohio" against an undercover Iraqi terrorist with a taste for show tunes. Writer-director Paul Weitz has rounded up key members of his cast from his total oeuvre, Dennis Quaid from In Good Company, Hugh Grant from About a Boy, Jennifer Coolidge from Down to Earth and American Pie, Chris Klein from just American Pie. The mood is affable rather than combative, not the ideal mood for satire. With Mandy Moore, Sam Golzari, Willem Dafoe, and Marcia Gay Harden. (2006) — Duncan Shepherd
