An Ohio housewife (Jobeth Williams) dashes off 2000 words in the style of the "Rebecca Ryan" series of suspense novels, and takes first prize in a writing contest. Her reward is a trip to Paris, with an unexpected bonus of a bump on the head in a traffic accident. When she wakes up, she thinks she actually is Rebecca Ryan, and a suitable adventure soon follows, including an extramarital romance which we are supposed to think is all right, inasmuch as her husband is balding, domineering, condescending, and not at all what a latent Rebecca Ryan deserves. Tom Conti, as the romantic interest and a reluctant Dr. Watson to the supersleuth heroine, is much the best thing in the movie, mainly because he can stand a few paces back from the facile plotting. With Giancarlo Giannini; directed by Rick Rosenthal. (1984) — Duncan Shepherd
