So rattled was James Stern by the thought of anyone in their right mind not voting for Mrs. Clinton that he spent the six months before the election criss-crossing America trying to understand what Donald Trump’s supporters saw in him. Who was Stern’s target audience? Surely Democrats don’t want to spend 90 minutes relitigating the election any more than Republicans yearn to squander so much as a cent of their entertainment dollar watching liberals whine. A personal harangue: the director argues that 1957 saw the high point of American happiness, and to prove it, Stern includes a colorized, pan-and-scan clip from the Elvis Presley musical Jailhouse Rock, which was shot in black-and-white CinemaScope. It appears that Stern has a weaker understanding of film history than Trump does of Andrew Jackson’s participation in the Civil War. Spoiler alert: Stern’s biggest takeaway was Mrs. Clinton lost because people across America felt they were not being heard. (2018) — Scott Marks
