Comic nightmare on a family "tradition" whereby a son is expected to reimburse his father for every lira spent on his upbringing. (Due date: the day the son becomes a father.) Most of the action is set on the Paris-to-Rome night train, as the frantic debtor attempts to beg and steal his way to thirty million lire. Some of the imagery aboard (and atop) the train is passably dreamlike, but the low-comic performances keep rudely awakening you. Sergio Castellitto, Nino Manfredi, Jeanne Moreau, Marie Trintignant; directed by Arthur Joffé. (1992) — Duncan Shepherd
