George Orwell's vision of the future did not come true by the appointed time, but certainly became a cliché: Newspeak, Thought Crime, Big Brother — who looks here in his still photos (all we ever see of him) a bit like Lionel Atwill. The thought to do a new, commemorative screen version, colder and drearier than the 1956 version, was as natural as it ought to have been suppressible. John Hurt, Suzanna Hamilton, Richard Burton; directed by Michael Radford. (1984) — Duncan Shepherd
