The Zoo Story
Peter just wants his Sunday ritual: read a good book at his favorite Central Park bench. He's an exec. at a small publishing firm (textbooks) and relishes his quiet time. Jerry, a rebel without a connection, needs to talk. He's manic and urgent, since he couldn't even befriend his landlord's gnarly dog. So Jerry, sly as a salesman, gets Peter to talk, and listen. In Edward Albee's 55-minute one-act, they couldn't be more opposite. In Backyard Renaissance's terrific, jackhammer of a production, smartly directed by Rosina Reynolds, they couldn't be better cast. Francis Gercke makes hyper-Jerry a time bomb with few ticks left (his lenghty monologue/shaggy dog story is excellent). Phil Johnson, one of San Diego's reigning comedians, displays his impressive acting skills. He reveals mostly mute Peter's emotional interior with often brilliant reactions.Critic's Pick.
