The La Jolla Playhouse's Without Walls Festival lets it reprise one of its most popular, site-specific shows. The Car Plays are what the title says: 10-minute one-acts staged inside (and at times out) a car. Tragedy happens, and daffy doings, and strange occurrences, all just inches away. The cars are parked in a row. You move from one to the next, often with little time to process the emotions still swirling in the previous vehicle. A "track' through a series of cars lasts one hour. The experience, for theater goers accustomed to a gulf between the house seats and the stage, feels like an infiltration between art and life. The safe boundaries break down. You are literally "in" the play.
