Wild Goose Dreams
Hansol Jung's new musical depictsthe growing bond between Minsung, a South Korean whose family's in the U.S., and Yoo Nanhee, a North Korean defector. Much of it takes place in cyberspace, and the La Jolla Playhouse production, imaginatively directed by Leigh Silverman, ranks as among the most intricate in some time. A seven-person chorus responds to events, and deliberatley blursthem; avatars shadowMinsung and Yoo, as does her trickster father's spirit (theleads -- James Kyson, Yunjun Kim, and Francis Jue -- are standouts). Therich tapestrymakes for a strong beginning and conclusion, butoverpowers weak scenes in themiddle. Though certainly watchable now, a thorough fine-tuning could make Dreamsinto something special.Worth a try.
