Voyeurs de Venus
In the early 19th century, Saartje Baartman, a black womanfrom South Africa, became the "Hottentot Venus" - "Hottentot": the N-word in those days. She toured in a freak show, was called the "missing link,"and suffered unthinkable torments. In Lydia R. Diamond's comedy-drama, Sara Washington, pop culture expert, wants to tell Saartje's story. Sara's plight with truth versus a best seller becomes a story in itself. As do the grotesque antics of Georges Cuvier, "Father of Palentology," who exploits Saartje even after her death. That's three stories, done with over 30 short scenes and expressive dance interludes. The ambitious combination leads to confusion and emotional distance. Moxie Theatre has top shelf people for this project: Delicia Turner Sonnenberg directing; Michael Mizeraney choreographing; and a solid cast headed by Cashae Monya. The play's a long sit. Qualityperformances (including relative newcomer Joy Yvonne Jones as Saartje) make itWorth a try.
