Violet
79 Horton Plaza, San Diego
Cost: $18 - $75
Twenty-five-year-old Violet is obsessed with facial features. When she was 13, an axe-blade slipped loose and disfigured hers. She's headed by bus to Oklahoma, where a TV evangelist promises to un-mar a face that is "worse than ugly." Brian Crawley's book for this musical (score by Jeanine Tesori) is a jumble, particularly the first third. As if to get through this section, the San Diego Rep plays it fast and loud as a rock concert. Once the bus reaches Memphis, the book's still sketchy, but the production settles in. Hannah Corrigan registers as Violet, and the cast performs some indelible cameos. Worth a try.
