Trouble in Mind
Alice Childress' backstage comedy/drama could have been the first play by an African-American woman produced on Broadway back in 1955. All she had to do was make two changes: the title and the ending. Childress refused, and the play got "lost" for two decades. In Trouble in Mind, Wiletta Mayer, an African-American actor, sticks to her artistic guns as well, even if it might ruin her only chance to star at the Greak White Way. At Moxie Theatre, director Delicia Turner Sonnenberg and a veritable all-star team of local actors give the 60-year-old script freshness and urgency. Foremost among equals, Ruff Yeager's Al Manners is an allegedly liberal director whose compassion's just a mask, and Monique Gaffney grows and then glows as Wiletta Mayer, the actor who can no longer "swallow what you mind."
