Tragedy of the Commons
Dakin Adams's terrace has a view of the Pacific, Point Loma, downtown, and beyond. But when a new neighbor threatens to build "up" and take the view away, Dakin breaks down. In Stephen Metcalfe's new play at Cygnet, though Jim Winker tries to show various sides, Dakin's a cold, one-note character built from without. Even a reference to the Lamed-Vov (the 36 "just men of the Hebrew tradition) doesn't prop him up. Cygnet's production is up to its high standards. But even a veteran cast can't conceal the sense that their roles exist only as thorns in Dakin's side. Commons unfolds as if the author wants to unburden himself about the fate of the world and makes the stage his pulpit. As a result, the script resembles indicated acting: it tells us what to feel then does the feeling for us.
