Tortilla Curtain
79 Horton Plaza, San Diego
Matthew Spangler's tight, 90-minute adaptation of T.C. Boyle's 1995 novel has an inexorable pace. But the San Diego Rep. has overemphasized Boyle's humor and sarcasm. The story contrasts an affluent couple and an undocumented couple living at each end of Topanga Canyon. The production casts a comic, at times even cartoonish, veneer over everything. This choice downplays serious themes (racism, xenophobia, economic and cultural segregation) and undercuts the gripping struggle of Candido and America to find their way as the world and their dreams grow smaller and smaller.
