A Thousand Splendid Suns

Khaled Hosseini's novel and Ursula Rani Sarma's theatrical adaptation tell a powerful story about 30 years in the lives of two Afghani women. When they first meet, Mariam can't stand young Laila. Mariam's abusive,control-freak husband makesLaila his second wife. The two women bond and endure the unendurable treatment of women under the Mujahideen and later the Taliban. The adaptation works, for the most part . The surprise is the production. Actors make predictable choices, the pacing is languid, and the flashy technical elements become a show in themselves - strife-torn Afghanistan with a Vegas glitz.Worth a try.
