The Who's Tommy
79 Horton Plaza, San Diego
Unlike the original, toned-down version, which premiered at the La Jolla Playhouse, the Rep's staging is rambunctious, cocky, and kick ass. Along with veteran performers, director Sam Woodhouse cast students from the School of Creative and Performing Arts. Whether dancing to Javier Velasco's inventive choreography, singing the familiar hits, or playing in the 19-piece band under Steve Gunderson's expert direction, they give the work a constant, antsy energy. And B. Slade (formerly known as Tonex) takes it from there. He plays the older Tommy, no longer deaf, dumb, or blind, and sings circles around the stratosphere.
