The Two Gentlemen of Verona
1363 Old Globe Way, San Diego, 92101
Cost: $29 - $62
The Old Globe gives Shakespeare's early comedy a dressed up, eye-appealing production. Richly fabric'd period costumes, an Italian city hovering over the stage, as if on a cloud, music and pageantry and a formal dance finale -- they almost disguise the thinness of the text. Renowned director Mark Lamos, who trimmed the play to 95 minutes, does yeo-person work with what he's got. The principals -- Adam Kantor, Hubert Point-Du Jour, Britney Coleman, and especially Kristen Villanueva as Julia -- revel in the highs and lows of youth. Richard Ruiz, Mark Pinter, Lowell Byers also do quality work. And as Crab the dog, Khloe Jezbera, a black lab almost steals the show wearing a white Renaissance ruff.
Worth a try.
