The Sugar Witch
291 Third Avenue, Chula Vista, 91910
Nathan Sanders' Gothic comedy-drama's a good choice for Halloween. It's set in Florida, on the edge of Buster's swamp, where things go bump in the night - and day. The script's eerie and funny, but also has lulls. The OnStage Playhouse production also has excesses. This is Rob Conroy's first directing assignment: some acting is miles over the top and the pacing wavers. His work also has pluses not often seen in a first timer. Yolanda Franklin mesmerizes throughout as Annabelle, the last of the sugar witches who must combat a generations-long curse, even if it means her life. Franklin shows eloquently that the play's real monsters aren't in the swamp or screeching overhead.
Worth a try.
