The Scottsboro Boys
1363 Old Globe Way, San Diego, 92101
John Kander and Fred Ebb's final collaboration tells the story of nine young black men, falsely accused of rape, as a minstrel show. The effect (tragedy in the guise of shuck and jive) is disturbing — and at times the antics cartoon the truth. The framing haunts the production the way the accusation drives David Thompson's book. Directed and choreographed by Susan Stroman, the ensemble cast is spectacular. In blatant, often over-explanatory ways, the show will inspire deep, controversial responses very few musicals would dare evoke.
