The Pianist of Willesden Lane
A Portrait of the Young Jewish Pianist in World War II. Lisa Jura dreamed of being a concert pianist. Her mother, Malka, was also a gifted pianist. Hershey Felder's 90 minute "concert drama" tells of the Holocaust and life in England during the buzz-bomb blit. Deeper down it's the story of three women with an unconditional bond: Malka, Lisa, and her daughter Mona Golabek, who performs their story, eloquently, through September 28. Golaback isn't "acting." She recalls horrors and joys in a simple voice. Then she plays Chopin, Debussy, Scriabin, and Grieg's "Piano Concerto in A Minor" (with fingertips ablaze) on a shiny black Steinway and literally "music's" the Lyceum Theatre. She does her mother and grandmother more than proud. She's a virtuoso. (Note: due to popular demand, the Rep has extended the run of this show.) Critic's Pick.
