The Odd Couple
1531 Tyler Avenue, San Diego, 92103
Neil Simon's contrary duo has become part of our national lore. The Sullivan Players' production has a big plus but several misses and questionable choices. The plus is Michael Bova. He makes Oscar Madison a human pigpen, then layers in a caring person acquainting himself with himself. Philip John's Felix Ungar is far too daffy and inexact (and throws away too many funny lines). Anne Sermon and JC Hamby are a treat as the Pidgeon sisters. But of the four actors in Simon's famous poker scene, only Joe Solazzo and Lee Howell listened to each other and knew where the jokes were. The quartet proved that one of Simon's best opening's isn't surefire.
