The Mystery Plays

Ion Theatre's known for edgy scripts and daring risks. Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa's two one-acts, on paper and on its intimate, black-box stage, are not Ion shows. The Filmmaker's Mystery (a man's saved from a train-wreck) and Ghost Children (a woman returns to the scene of an axe-murder) have occasional glimmers that qualify, but they're also derivative, overly narrated, and much more languid than scarey. Karin Filijan's expert lighting, combined with piped in fog, sets the scene for the "intangible" and the "invisible." But one-note acting, especially from the two narrators, dull the pace and any possible suspense.
