The Mousetrap
303 Main Street, Vista, 92084
Agatha Christie's whodunit has run consecutively since 1952, over 25,000 performances. Judging from Moonlight at the Avo's well-performed production, Mousetrap's a mite long in the tooth. The pace is leisurely, the action spare. But instead of jazzing things up, director Jason Heil accepts the script as a period piece and has it unfold on its terms. This allows a fine cast to play two people at once: their character and their character as a suspect (which puts the action in the audience, their eyes darting, frisking the various characters for clues). The design work is of a piece, and so realistic when someone opens the snow-draped glass doors, you can feel the cold rush in.
Worth a try.
