The Motherf**er with the Hat
Cygnet warns patrons that Stephen Aldy Guirgis's comedy-drama "contains strong f**king language." And it does, especially when Jackie gets out of prison, hoping to make major changes in his life, and finds a strange hat in the bedroom of his beloved. Like Alice going through the looking glass, he enters a spun around world unlike anything he expected -- or can deal with (and he's not quite right-side up, having anger and self-sabotage issues as well). With an excellent ensemble cast, Cygnet rips into Guurgis's sharp dialogue and scenes that build and then explode. Director Rob Lufty and the actors make the characters difficult to judge. They move they hurt, they rage, they try, they adjust at such a striking clip that labels fall away. And the language? Imagine them not talking that way, as in "oh pish-piddle, have you been making tender, ardent love to my Lady Fair?"
