The Moors
4545 Park Boulevard, San Diego, 92116
Cost: $15 - $50
In a gloomy mansion near tracts of wasteland somewhere in England, something sinister bubbles beneath the genteel surface. It erupts when a governess arrives in this modern take on the Gothic novel. Repressed sexuality, heartless sibling rivalry, a combination of "bones and blood as part of the land" all color Diversionary Theatre's period piece. Only this isn't 1840s England. There are no British accents. All, from the overbearing older sister to the spunky younger sister, and a philosophical dog who befriends a hen, speak in contemporary vernacular. The set, lights, sounds, and thin sheets of rolling fog add ambience to a smashing play.Critic's Pick.
