The Maiden's Prayer
Nicky Silver's "dark farce" probes the fates of re-broken hearts (a character says, "inner beauty's a little to much to hope for" these days). The play's a hybrid: part-Chekhov's Three Sisters (Libby and Paul are so stuck on Taylor, he becomes a kind of Moscow), part Silver. Though the play boasts flashes of brilliance - this is Nicky Silver, after all - the whole tends to weigh down the parts. In the Triad Productions staging, the comedy cartoons the drama. Some individual performances stand out: Rhianna Basore's Libby, a self-destructive survivor, combines hilarity and hurt without diluting either. Nathan Caracter, new to San Diego, does an impressive turn as Paul, one of the most supportive people in theater history.
