When King Henry II, estranged wife Eleanor, and their sons bicker, the dysfunction that results can cost the lives of thousands. "It's 1183," shouts Eleanor, "and we're all barbarians!" James Goldman's historical comedy-drama has been staged nutty as a soap-opera and as solemn as Hamlet. The North Coast Rep's opening night steered a middle course. Kandis Chappell heads a strong cast with a grounded, deeply felt portrayal of Eleanor.
