The Glass Menagerie
Cygnet Theatre's uneven production of Tennessee Williams's drama offers three terrific performances: Rosina Reynolds paints a many-sided portrait of Amanda Wingfield (based on Williams's mother); Brian Mackey hits the right notes as the Gentleman Caller; and Amanda Sitton, born to play Laura, is as fragile as her figurines. Francis Gercke, however, waves his hands, indicates movements, and consistently gives awkward line readings. His overstated affectations are all the more annoying because the production has such quality elsewhere, including Andy Hull's appropriately cramped set, Shirley Pierson's period costumes, and Michelle Caron's expressionistic lighting, which makes Laura's glass menagerie gleam like diamonds.
Worth a try.
